It takes a while to download the whole exhibition, especially with a modem connection. It is a part of the experience:
Quite interestingly the biggest images are the oldests: Ancient painters completely forgot to reduce the number of colors. No webmaster would do the same mistake nowadays. And that is not Blade runner or Blow up pictures. Try to zoom! On the other hand I can give you an idea of what I love. We made a long journey toward something fantastic.
I'm not especially pessimistic, just a bit bokononist.

I grow up at 40km of this picture. It is not a picture but a set of pictures, the Issenheim altar of Matthias Grunewald. Close your eyes now. Forgot classifications, yes it is culture, yes it is fine art, yes it is religious picture but it is also one of the most beautiful thing a human ever made. Reproduction fails to show how great and also how big it is. Raise your eyes to see it. |

The picture lies. Not only it says nothing about the size, but colors are wrong. It looks like old pictures refuse to be captured. When I saw Night Hawk, I was surprised how the photographs were close to the original.

When I entered college, I got a book about history. In that book, there was that picture. The men on the left are the victims. The men on the right, the bad guys are french. I'm french.
It impressed me. I visited Madrid mostly to see the picture. Prado museum is not big by Le Louvre standard but the Tres de Mayo was almost hidden. I saw before the king family.
A critic said that it was almost a caricature and that the king was an idiot to pay to look ridiculous. Still the king and his ugly wife look kind and human. Perhaps it was important at that time.
After the soldiers, I saw the sardine burial. It was a fair like Carnival or Halloween, in Spain but also in the south of France. I don't know what it meant.
The sardine burial suffered from the reproduction. You hardly feel comfortable in front of it, but it suffered less than the goat. Here you see the evil.

| Egon Schielle was the designated successor of Gustav Klimt at the head of Vienna Secession. The plan failed. Both died in 1918 from the spanish flu. They were not alone: spanish flu killed between 25 and 40 million persons in three months. |

| When I was student I had a big poster of Harzack in my room. It is the only image that I found. A sad thing about modern artists is that they (and their inheritants) are eager to protect their rights. For us, poor programmers, life is simpler: just like Grunewald we are paid to work and abandon our rights. |
